Pool construction and renovation
How pools are built, how finishes and waterproofing age, and when resurfacing or a full renovation makes sense.

Problem
Fibreglass pool problems: osmosis blisters, gelcoat wear and cracks
Blisters on a fibreglass pool are usually osmotic: water passes through the gelcoat and reacts with the laminate behind it. Hairline or spider cracks often stay in the gelcoat, while bulging walls or cracks through the laminate point to structural stress. Isolated damage can usually be repaired locally, widespread osmosis may need the surface stripped and relaminated, and a fibreglass pool should only be drained under professional supervision.

Construction
Pool construction types in the UAE and what they mean for repairs
Most UAE pools are concrete shells finished with tiles, mosaic or plaster, but fibreglass, vinyl liner and stainless steel pools also exist, and any of them can be a skimmer pool or an overflow pool with a balance tank. The construction type decides which repairs are possible, which materials are compatible and which specialist has the right experience.

How it works
Pool waterproofing: what the membrane does and why it matters before re-tiling
Tiling manufacturers expect a pool to be a watertight concrete structure, and their pool systems add a flexible waterproofing membrane between the levelled shell and the tile adhesive. Before re-tiling, the shell should be tested for watertightness and any cracks investigated, because leaks are very hard to find once the new finish is on. Re-tiling over a failed membrane or a leaking shell rarely solves the problem.

Comparison
Resurfacing a concrete pool: tiles, mosaic, plaster or pebble
Tiles, glass mosaic, cement-based plaster and pebble or quartz aggregate finishes all go onto a sound concrete shell, and none of them fixes a shell that leaks. Tiles and mosaic depend on a watertight, flat substrate and pool-rated adhesive and grout; plaster and pebble finishes depend on a careful 28-day start-up after filling. Choose the finish after the shell, waterproofing and water chemistry have been assessed.

Problem
Vinyl liner pools: wrinkles, tears, fading and when to replace the liner
Small tears in a vinyl liner can usually be patched, and minor wrinkles can sometimes be worked out once their cause is fixed. Deep creases, a liner slipping out of its track, brittle faded vinyl, repeated tears or a liner that was the wrong size from the start make replacement the realistic option. Never drain a liner pool completely: manufacturers warn that it can shrink and crack the liner.

Guide
When does a full pool renovation make sense?
Repair makes sense when a fault is local and its cause is known. A renovation makes sense when failures are widespread, when the same systems keep failing, or when the pool has to be emptied anyway and several systems (finish, waterproofing, pipework, equipment) are near the end of their life. A specialist inspection, and leak detection where water is being lost, should come before the decision.
