Vinyl liner pools: wrinkles, tears, fading and when to replace the liner

Can a wrinkled or torn pool liner be repaired, or does it need replacing?

Small tears in a vinyl liner can usually be patched, and minor wrinkles can sometimes be worked out once their cause is fixed. Deep creases, a liner slipping out of its track, brittle faded vinyl, repeated tears or a liner that was the wrong size from the start make replacement the realistic option. Never drain a liner pool completely: manufacturers warn that it can shrink and crack the liner.

How a liner pool works

In a vinyl liner pool, the walls and floor provide the structure, and a sheet of vinyl hung from a track at the top of the wall holds the water and gives the pool its colour. Latham, a US manufacturer of liner and fibreglass pools, describes walls of steel or non-corrosive polymer overlaid with the liner. The weight of the water presses the liner into place, which is why so many liner problems trace back to water: its chemistry, its level and what happens behind the liner.

Patching and fitting liners is a different trade from tiling concrete, so confirm that a specialist works on liner pools before booking a visit.

Wrinkles

Latham lists the main causes:

  • Installation and sizing. A liner that was measured or fitted wrongly creases from the start. A properly installed liner sits flush against the walls with no visible creases.
  • Water chemistry. Low pH and high calcium hardness can cause wrinkles. Undissolved chlorine or shock that settles on the floor can degrade the vinyl so that it shrinks and puckers.
  • Water behind the liner. Heavy rain or flooding can raise the water table and push water under the liner. When it recedes, the liner tries to shrink back and wrinkles.
  • Temperature. Vinyl expands in heat and shrinks in the cold, and repeated cycles can leave permanent wrinkles.
  • Low water or leaks. When the level drops, exposed vinyl can dry out and shrink.

Latham recommends pH of 7.4 to 7.6 and calcium hardness of 200 to 300 ppm for liner pools. Kayden, a liner manufacturer, gives the same pH target and warns against going above 7.8, where calcium can form and stick to the liner.

Removing wrinkles. Once the cause is fixed, Latham describes gentle methods for minor wrinkles: smoothing them towards the nearest wall in bare feet, and warmer water, because wrinkles form more easily and are harder to remove when the water is cold. It also warns that home remedies are at best temporary and can damage the liner and void its warranty. Deep creases, bulging, or a liner floating away from the wall need a professional assessment, and sometimes the answer is a new liner.

Tears and punctures

A tear lets water escape behind the liner. Kayden warns that water leaking into the ground around an inground pool can soften the soil and cause further problems, so tears should be repaired as soon as possible. Latham advises checking the liner each month for small tears, and finding and patching any leak before trying to deal with wrinkles.

Prevention is mostly care: no sharp or hard-edged toys, and attention with poles and cleaners. Latham notes that a wrinkle caught by a pool vacuum or a toe can itself tear.

If the water is dropping but you cannot find a tear, run the bucket test in our guide to why a pool loses water before assuming the liner is at fault.

Fading and bleaching

Kayden says sunlight can discolour a liner but that fading is usually caused by improper use of chemicals, and that a faded liner can become brittle. Latham's maintenance guidance is specific about one cause: chlorine crystals resting on the liner can bleach and weaken it, so chlorine or shock should be fully dissolved in a bucket before it goes into the pool. Latham also recommends cleaning the waterline, where dirt and oils collect and stain, and covering the pool when it is not in use to block sunlight. With the strength of the UAE sun, a cover is worth serious thought for a liner pool.

Never drain a liner pool completely

Both manufacturers are clear. Latham says a vinyl liner pool should never be completely drained, and if water must be removed, no more than half the volume should go. Kayden says complete draining can make the liner bow and crack, and that refilling it afterwards can leave bubbles and wrinkles. Leave any decision to drain to a liner specialist.

Repair or replace

Patching or adjustment makes sense when:

  • there is a single small tear in otherwise supple vinyl
  • wrinkles are minor and their cause (chemistry, a leak, a low water level) has been fixed

Replacement is the realistic option when:

  • the liner keeps tearing in new places
  • it has faded and turned brittle
  • it has stretched so far that it slips out of the track at the top of the wall, which Kayden treats as a sign to replace
  • creases are deep, or the liner was the wrong size from the start

Kayden lists four signs that a liner needs replacing: discolouration and fading, rips and cracks, wrinkling and slipping, and leaks. Judge a liner by its condition rather than its age.

What a specialist needs from you

  • photographs of the wrinkle, tear or faded area, with something for scale
  • recent water test results, especially pH, calcium hardness and chlorine
  • how much water the pool is losing, if any
  • the liner's age and any warranty paperwork

A liner warranty may depend on how the pool was looked after, so keep your test records and avoid home fixes the manufacturer advises against.

Questions people ask

Can I remove liner wrinkles myself?

Latham describes gentle steps for minor wrinkles once the cause is fixed, such as smoothing them towards the wall in bare feet and warmer water. It warns that home remedies are at best temporary and can damage the liner and void its warranty, so persistent or deep wrinkles need a professional.

Why has my liner faded so quickly?

Kayden says fading is usually caused by improper use of chemicals rather than sunlight alone. Latham warns that undissolved chlorine resting on the liner can bleach it, so dissolve chlorine or shock in a bucket before adding it.

How much water can be drained from a liner pool?

Latham says a liner pool should never be completely drained and that no more than half the volume should be removed. Leave draining decisions to a liner specialist.
