Liner repair and replacement
Liner repair covers patching tears and pinholes in vinyl pool liners, refitting a liner that has slipped out of its track, and replacing liners that have reached the end of their life. It applies to pools built with a vinyl liner hung inside a wall structure.
When you need it
Latham, a manufacturer of vinyl liner pools, describes the signs that a liner needs attention:
- Cracks, tears or wrinkles. Latham says the combination of UV and pool chemicals gradually degrades vinyl and causes small cracks and tears.
- Water loss. According to Latham, a level dropping by more than an inch over a week or two can point to a liner leak.
- Stains and discolouration that suggest the vinyl is becoming brittle with age.
- Stretching or slipping: significant wrinkles, or a liner that keeps sagging out of the coping track.
- Falling out of the bead or track, which Latham calls in many cases a clear sign the liner needs replacing.
How a specialist does it
- Find the leak. Dye testing is a common method. LeakTronics lists seams, corners and the areas around every fitting as places to test in vinyl liner pools, along with skimmers, returns, lights and the main drain.
- Patch or replace. Latham notes that, depending on its size, a leak may be patched, while a larger crack or tear may mean it is time to replace the liner.
- Refit the bead. A liner that has come out of its track can sometimes be made more pliable with warm water and guided back. Latham advises calling a professional if you are not confident, and notes that a liner falling out of the track often signals replacement.
- Replacement. The old liner is removed, the walls and floor are checked and repaired, the new liner is measured and fitted, and the pool is refilled in a controlled way so the liner seats without wrinkles.
One rule matters throughout. Latham calls fully draining a vinyl liner pool one of the biggest mistakes an owner can make, because the weight of the water helps hold the liner in place. Draining can cause bubbles and wrinkles and make the liner more likely to tear. Leave any draining decision to the specialist.
Water balance affects liner life too. Latham links chlorine that is too high to fading and loss of strength, and pH and alkalinity that are out of range to wrinkling and sagging.
What to ask before you hire
- Is the damage patchable, or is the liner near the end of its life?
- How will you find every leak, including at fittings and seams?
- If replacing, who measures, and what happens if the new liner does not fit?
- How will you protect the liner during any partial draining?
- What liner thickness and material do you offer, and what warranty comes with it?
- Will you check the walls, floor base and fittings while the liner is out?
UAE notes
Ask how much vinyl liner work a company has done before you book. Not every pool company handles liners, and fitting a replacement well depends on experience with the product.
Sun is strong all year. Latham lists sun and UV exposure as a cause of fading and degradation, so pools in full sun deserve closer attention to water balance and to early signs of brittleness.
Some rooftop and shared pools use liner or membrane systems over a structure. Check with building management before replacement, because the work may affect waterproofing over occupied space.
Questions people ask
Can a small tear be patched?
Latham says that, depending on the size of the leak, it may be patched. Larger cracks or tears may mean replacement.
Should I drain the pool to look at the liner?
No. Latham warns that fully draining a vinyl liner pool can cause bubbles and wrinkles and make tearing more likely. A specialist decides whether any lowering is needed.
How long does a vinyl liner last?
Latham says a well maintained inground liner lasts 8 to 12 years on average, with some lasting longer in ideal conditions. Sun, chemistry and water level all affect it.
