Equipment upgrades
Equipment upgrades replace ageing pumps, filters, heaters, chillers and controls with current equipment, usually to cut running costs, improve water quality or add features. A good upgrade looks at the whole system so the new parts work together.
When you need it
- Repeated repairs on old equipment.
- High electricity use from a single-speed pump running long hours.
- You want to add cooling, heating, salt chlorination or automation.
- Filters that never backwash clean because they do not match the pump.
- Equipment for which parts are no longer available.
How a specialist does it
Pumps. Variable speed pumps are the best-known efficiency upgrade. Pentair explains the pump affinity laws behind them: flow changes in proportion to speed, head with the square of speed, and power with the cube of speed. By Pentair's figures, halving the speed cuts power consumption by 87%, which is why a variable speed pump running longer and slower can use far less energy than a single-speed one. Pentair quotes energy savings of up to 90% compared with traditional pumps.
Filters. Matching matters. Hayward warns that a pump supplying less than 60% of a sand filter's designed flow rate will never backwash it completely, and that a pump exceeding the filter's maximum flow can channel the sand bed so that debris bypasses filtration. A new pump may mean a new filter, or the reverse.
Heat pumps and chillers. Each has its own flow range and plumbing order set by the manufacturer. A new pump has to deliver what they need, especially at the lower speeds a variable speed pump will run most of the time.
A good upgrade usually involves:
- Surveying existing equipment, pipe sizes, electrical supply and space in the plant room.
- Working out the flow and turnover the pool needs.
- Choosing equipment that matches: pump to filter, pump to heater or chiller, controller to everything.
- Installing with the correct plumbing order and electrical protection.
- Programming speeds and schedules so the expected savings actually happen.
What to ask before you hire
- What flow does my pool need, and how did you calculate it?
- Will the new pump suit my filter, heater or chiller, or do they need changing too?
- What speed schedule will you set, and what runs at which speed?
- Can the new equipment be run by my existing controller?
- What happens to the old equipment?
- Which warranties apply, and who handles claims locally?
UAE notes
Dubai Municipality's guidelines for approving pool plans set a maximum water turnover of 4 hours, require two pumps for each swimming pool, and ask for full equipment details on the drawings, including pumps, filters and disinfection systems. If you upgrade equipment on an approved pool, particularly a shared or hotel pool, check with the specialist and building management whether drawings or approvals need updating.
Pools often run filtration and cooling for long hours in summer, so pump efficiency shows up clearly on the electricity bill. Ask the specialist for the proposed run schedule in summer and in winter, not just the pump's rated figures.
Plant rooms in villas and towers are often tight. Measure access doors and space before ordering, since larger filters or added equipment may not fit where the old ones stood.
Questions people ask
Does a variable speed pump really save energy?
Pentair explains that power varies with the cube of pump speed, so running slower for longer uses much less energy. It quotes up to 90% savings compared with traditional pumps, depending on how the pump is set up.
If I change the pump, do I need a new filter?
Possibly. Hayward warns that both too little and too much flow cause sand filter problems, so the pump and filter must be matched.
Do equipment changes need approval?
For pools built under Dubai Municipality approval, equipment is listed on the drawings. Check with your specialist and building management before changing the specification.
