I am not sure what is wrong
Sometimes a pool just seems wrong: the level, the colour, a noise or a damp patch, with no obvious cause. You do not need to know the answer before asking for help. A clear description of what you see helps the right specialist respond quickly.
Describe what you notice, not what you think the cause is
Specialists work from symptoms. A note such as "the level drops about two centimetres a day and the pump basket has bubbles" is more useful than "I think a pipe is broken". Try to cover:
- What you see, hear or smell.
- Where it is: the pool, the surround, the plant room, the chiller or the balance tank.
- When it started, and whether it is constant or comes and goes.
- What changes it, such as the pump running or off, day or night, or topping up.
- What changed recently, such as new equipment, garden work, a service visit or building work nearby.
Useful things to record
- Water level. Mark it at the same time each day for a few days.
- Filter gauge reading. Pentair's owner's manual for its cartridge filters calls the pressure gauge the primary indicator of how the filter is operating. Note the reading and compare it with what is normal for your pool.
- Water temperature and clarity. A short daily note is enough.
- Photos and short videos. Include the whole pool, close-ups, the plant room and any display or error code.
- Rating plates. Photograph the labels on the pump, filter, chiller and control panel.
Do not open equipment, touch electrical parts or lower the water to investigate.
Which specialist usually inspects first
A simple guide to the first call:
- Water loss, damp ground or cracks: a leak detection specialist.
- Equipment noise, weak flow or cloudy water while the system runs: a pump and filter technician, or a general pool repair company.
- Warm water or chiller error codes: a chiller or heat pump specialist.
- Loose tiles or a rough, stained finish: a tile and surface repair specialist.
- Several of these at once, or an old pool: a renovation contractor who can survey the whole pool.
LeakTronics' leak detection guidance recommends ruling out equipment problems before testing the pool itself, which is why many first visits begin in the plant room. If you remain unsure, a general pool repair company can usually inspect first and refer you on.
Safety first
If you notice a burning smell, a tripping breaker, water around electrical equipment or a damaged underwater light, keep people out of the water and away from the plant room until a qualified technician has checked it. Dubai Municipality's safety guidelines for private pools state that damaged parts of a pool should be repaired or replaced immediately.
What a specialist will usually do
The first visit is usually an inspection. Expect the specialist to look at the pool and the equipment, go through your notes and explain what they think is happening and which further tests may be needed. Ask before the visit whether the inspection is charged and whether a written report is included.
What to prepare before you call
- Your notes on level, gauge reading, temperature and clarity.
- Photos, videos and rating plates.
- Pool type, size and approximate age.
- Access details: plant room keys, building permits for contractors and parking.
- For buildings and communities, the contact who can approve a visit.
Questions people ask
What if I describe the problem wrongly?
That is fine. Specialists expect owners to describe symptoms, not causes. Share what you have noticed and your notes, and the inspection will establish the cause.
Can one company look at everything?
Many general pool repair companies inspect both the pool and the equipment and can refer specialist work, such as leak detection or chiller repair, to others.
Is it safe to keep swimming?
If there is any electrical concern, sharp edges or water you cannot see through, keep people out until a specialist has looked. For anything else, ask the specialist when you call.
