Equipment and supplies

Equipment and supply businesses sell pumps, filters, chillers, heaters, lights, controls, chemicals, fittings and spare parts. Some also install and service what they sell, while others supply trade customers and owners who use their own technician.

When you need it

  • A part has failed and you or your technician need a replacement.
  • You want to compare equipment before an upgrade.
  • You need chemicals, test kits or consumables such as cartridges and filter media.
  • A maintenance company needs a dependable source of genuine parts.

How to buy well

Buying the right part is mostly about information. Before contacting a supplier, gather:

  1. Make, model and serial number from the equipment label, with photos of the label and the unit.
  2. Pool volume and, for pumps and filters, pipe sizes.
  3. What is connected: filter, heater or chiller, salt system, controller.
  4. Electrical supply: voltage and phase.
  5. The fault, if you are replacing a part: what happened, and what a technician found.

Matching matters as much as quality. Hayward explains that a pump supplying less than 60% of a sand filter's designed flow will never backwash it completely, while a pump exceeding the filter's maximum flow can channel the sand bed so debris passes straight through. A cheaper pump, or a more powerful one, is not automatically the better fit. The filter's label lists the flow rates a supplier needs to check.

Installation is part of the decision. Pentair's pump manual states that its pump should be installed and serviced only by a qualified pool service professional, and lists checks such as seated lid gaskets, open suction valves and a full strainer pot before start-up. It also warns that running a pump dry damages the mechanical seal. Buying equipment without arranging a competent installer can create safety risks and may affect the warranty.

For chemicals, ask for the safety data sheet and follow the label. Chemicals bought in bulk need suitable, secure storage.

What to ask before you buy

  • Is this the exact replacement for my model, or a compatible alternative?
  • Is the product genuine, and is it covered by a local warranty?
  • Who handles warranty claims: the supplier, the installer or the brand?
  • Are spare parts and service for this brand available locally?
  • Do you install, or should I arrange a qualified installer?
  • For chemicals: what are the storage and handling instructions?

UAE notes

Dubai Municipality's private pool safety guidelines ask owners to store, handle and use pool chemicals according to the manufacturer's instructions and safety data sheet, in a dedicated storage area with a lock, and to keep keys or codes away from children. They also ask for all pool equipment to be serviced according to the manufacturer's instructions. Keep manuals and safety data sheets for everything you buy.

For shared and hotel pools, check with building management before changing to equipment of a different specification, since the installed equipment may form part of the pool's approval.

Ask suppliers whether equipment is rated for outdoor installation in high heat and, near the sea, in salt air, and how the warranty treats those conditions.

Questions people ask

What information does a supplier need to find the right part?

Make, model and serial number, photos of the label, pool volume, pipe sizes and what else is connected. For electrical equipment, the supply voltage and phase.

Can I install a new pump myself?

Pentair states that its pump should be installed and serviced only by a qualified pool service professional. Incorrect installation can be unsafe and may affect the warranty.

How should pool chemicals be stored?

Dubai Municipality's private pool guidelines call for storage according to the manufacturer's instructions and safety data sheet, in a dedicated area with a lock, out of children's reach.
