Pool chiller service

Pool chiller service covers the heat pumps and chillers that cool pool water in hot months: installation checks, annual servicing, fault finding and repair. In the UAE summer it often decides whether an outdoor pool stays pleasant to use.

When you need it

  • The water is too warm to be refreshing even with the chiller running.
  • The unit shows a flow, pressure or sensor fault.
  • Water collects under the unit even after it has been off for a while.
  • The fan runs but the unit short-cycles or stops.
  • Before summer, as routine servicing.

How a specialist does it

Many units sold for this job are reversible heat pumps that can both heat and cool. Hayward, for example, describes its Heat+Chill heat pumps as able to chill, cool and heat a pool with one device, including lowering the pool temperature during hot summer months.

A service visit should follow the manufacturer's own checklist. The Jandy VersaTemp manual sets out the annual professional inspection it requires:

  1. Check for loose or broken wires and terminal connections.
  2. Verify the pressure or flow switch: with the circulation pump off, the heat pump must not start.
  3. Inspect the electrical controls, high and low limits and the temperature control.
  4. Inspect the evaporator coil for blockage and clean it as necessary.
  5. Clear the condensate drain of debris.
  6. Run a normal operating cycle and confirm the unit works properly.

Fault finding often starts with water flow. Jandy's troubleshooting table links its no flow fault to the circulation pump, valve positions, dirty filters and skimmers, low water level and water features that bypass the unit. Its high refrigerant pressure fault is also linked to restricted water flow.

Condensation is normal. Jandy says its units produce condensate at a steady rate while running, more in humid conditions. To tell condensation from a leak, it suggests switching the heat pump off, then the circulation pump, for at least an hour. If water keeps draining after that, call for service, because a heat exchanger or plumbing leak is possible.

Refrigerant work is specialised. Jandy requires installation and service by a licensed and qualified contractor where local rules exist, and technicians certified for handling its refrigerant.

What to ask before you hire

  • Is the unit sized for my pool volume, sun exposure and the temperature I want in summer?
  • Will you follow the manufacturer's service checklist and give me a written record?
  • If refrigerant work is needed, who is certified to do it?
  • Is my pump giving the flow the unit needs, and is the plumbing order correct?
  • Does the unit have the clearances and airflow its manual requires?
  • Are parts for my brand available locally, and how quickly?

UAE notes

Demand for chiller service rises sharply in summer. Booking routine service before the hottest months is usually easier than finding a technician once the unit has stopped.

Plumbing order matters. Jandy specifies that an automatic chemical feeder or chlorinator goes downstream of the heat pump, with a check valve between them, so chemically saturated water cannot siphon back into the unit and damage it.

Jandy also says to keep sprinkler heads from spraying on the unit, to prevent corrosion. On the coast, where salt air adds to that, ask the technician about coil protection and how often the coil should be cleaned.

Rooftop and podium units can affect neighbours through noise and warm discharge air. Check with building management before installing or moving one.

Questions people ask

Is water under the unit a leak?

Not necessarily. Jandy explains that condensation is normal while running. Switch the unit and then the pump off for at least an hour: if water keeps draining, call for service.

Can one unit heat and cool the pool?

Many heat pumps are reversible. Hayward's Heat+Chill range, for example, is described as able to chill, cool and heat a pool with one device.

How often should a chiller be serviced?

Follow your manufacturer. Jandy requires an inspection by a qualified technician at least once a year for its VersaTemp units.
